When you hear the word 'Christmas Cake', what kind of cake do you picture in your mind?
A rich, moist, homemade Christmas fruit cake? That (= a homemade fruit cake) certainly comes to my mind in New Zealand.(BTW, we have Christmas in summer in New Zealand!)
It's a little different in Japan. (I left Japan more than 2 decades ago, but I think (hope) I still know enough to talk about the country where I'm from.)
I think the most common cake for Christmas in Japan is still a Strawberry Shortcake (Layer Cake).
As you may know, Christmas is not for spending time with your family in Japan unless you have younger children in your family.
Christmas is for kids to eat Christmas Cake and receive a gift from Santa, and for couples to spend a romantic time together (popular for popping the question).
Oh, and when people ask about your plan for 'Christmas' in Japan, they are talking about Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day.
I will write another post about Christmas in Japan, and focus on Christmas Cake in this post.
